The St. Louis Cardinals hire Daniel Descalso as bench coach for the 2024 season. Descalso spent parts of ten seasons in Major League Baseball as a player and played with the Cardinals from 2010-2014. He was a member of the 2011 World Series winning team, slashing .333/.333/.333 with three runs in the 2011 postseason.
The Cardinals acquired Descalso in the 2007 MLB Draft, selecting him in the third round with the 112th overall pick. 2024 will be Descalso’s ninth season in the Cardinals’ organization.
According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, Former bench coach Joe McEwing will move into a special assistant role under John Mozeliak.
Descalso last played in MLB in 2019 for the Chicago Cubs. He then played for the Minnesota Twins Triple-A affiliate St. Paul Saints in 2021 before retiring from his playing career.
In 2023, the Arizona Diamondbacks hired Descalso as a Baseball Operations Assistant. There, he served a role similar to what McEwing will now serve with the Cardinals.
While the fans are happy for the most part with this move, many are questioning where this leaves Yadier Molina. There is still an opportunity for Molina to be a part of the coaching staff, but it is now likely that he will be a part-timer and able to be active in the clubhouse as needed.
Overall, the two moves the Cardinals made on Monday, November 20, symbolize a bigger picture the Cardinal’s front office is painting. By bringing back Lance Lynn and Descalso, the front office is attempting to reinstall the winning ways of the club in the 2010’s.
Who’s next? Michael Wacha and Joe Kelly would be welcome additions to the pitching staff.
On the other side, Albert Pujols, Carlos Beltran, Lance Berkman, and Matt Holliday would be great additions to the coaching staff.
